Tonga has launched a solar energy plant funded by New Zealand. The plant is called 'Maama Mai' - meaning 'let there be light' - and opened on 26 July.
Tonga has imported half a million litres of diesel a year to operate generators providing electricity for heating and lighting.
Maama Mai is a step change to the country's renewable energy targets providign 40 per cent of power to the main island.
Tonga will continue to have most of their energy as fossil fuel provided for shipping transport and electricity.
